"Yes, I'll be like the sack of shits that my former friends have become," I finished, eliciting a laugh that echoed my own. It made me feel sick, but I ignored the pain in my body. If I couldn't stand, I could fight. And if I couldn't fight, I would need to accept that a worse version of myself would be in my place forever.

"I think you're the inferior version of me, actually," the other Sloan said, reading my thoughts. Great. "You can't defend against me, you can barely hit me, and all the dumb copies of my army are easily being defeated. Look at them, Sloan! They're just toys compared to mine."

Despair filled my eyes as I looked out at the black field. The enemy wasn't lying. My own side wasn't winning, barely getting hits in. There were so many openings, and the enemy wasn't taking them at all. They were just enjoying beating the weaker copies of themselves. There wasn't a single ounce of empathy present. They enjoyed the suffering and nothing else.

"That's how we need it to be, Sloan. If you're just so weak all the time, nothing is going to get done. Your friends are going to kill you, and they will enjoy it all over again. Do you really want that?" the other Sloan goaded me, leading me down all the wrong thought paths. Ideas about what would happen if I lost weren't well-received, and the enemy knew it. They were able to look at my every thought. Who said they couldn't outright manipulate them? "You can't know for sure, buddy. How about you just let yourself die, and we'll see how this all plays out?"

The thought honestly crossed my head for a second. Just falling to the ground in the vain hope that this version of myself would make it all right. They were the powerful version. There was no question in that. They could kill James, Agnes, and all the others within a heartbeat. They would do it without even thinking about it, likely having a smile on their face the entire time.

And then what?

Would I allow the [Demon King] to be fully vanquished? Would I throw the pieces into the place they needed to be? Would I stop it at all costs, even if it meant losing all my power? Looking at the sadistic nature of my army, I knew there was never a chance of that happening.

"There really isn't," the other Sloan said with a shrug as if he'd been caught with his hand in the cookie jar. "Face it, Sloan. We can be the god of earth. We have the power needed to take over everything. Give it a month, and we'll be able to take on the collective power of every S-Ranker on the planet at once. Can't you see the usefulness of just being the leader? We can shape and mold the world into a perfect state. We can control the [Rifts] and make sure nobody gets hurt ever again.
